hammering or pulling

The experiences whether hammering or pulling to remove shaft/gear box/ bearing seeks high attention from the maintenance people. There is no specific Engineering theory for this. The practical experiences/methods and environment will suggest what to do and how to do. So don't panic. Before doing such types of work/job try to look for every possibility to pull out the shaft/gear box/ bearing rather to hammering. The hammering will cause a great damage/loss in the long run. Sometimes it needs some arrangement to pull out the object with the on hand Puller and it may take time. From my practical experiences i like to share an incident happened in my workplace. The technician tries to take out a Gear box which was coupled in a solid shaft with key way. They tried for a long time , but unfortunately they were failed to take out gear box. As the gear box body didn't well suited for pull out the gear box, technicians were engaged in hammering behind from the gear box. Another things were the gear box was in top vertical position and there were little space for maintenance work. However at last decision were made to take out the gear box by pulling . So they made arrangement with the on hand puller and finally they succeed to took out gear box.  I like to draw attention of maintenance people to share such kind of experiences .

Heating surface to Boiler capacity

For many years five (5) square feet per boiler horsepower was the standard in the design of the traditional multi-pass fire tube boiler. In these cases about 40 - 50 % of the burner's heat energy was transferred in the furnace (first pass) as radiant energy, and the balance was transferred in the convection passes which consisted of 2 or 3 additional passes using 2 - 3" tubes some of which may have had turbulators to increase the heat transfer coefficient. Today, with the call for smaller fire tube footprints, and the use of sophisticated computer algoythms, i.e., Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), boiler designers are able to produce smaller fire tube boilers with the same integrity and life as the old 5 square foot boiler; using a larger furnace (60-70% radiant heat absorbed), proper matching of burner to furnace, and extended surfaces in the convective tube passes which has now been reduced from 2 or 3 additional passes to 1. This not only preserves or enhances fuel to steam efficiency in a smaller package, but reduces the blower motor brake horsepower as well. A good example of the design is Cleaver Brooks CBEX Elite or Premium models which can be found on their website.

Difference of Wet cell and dry cell batteries

The difference between wet cell and dry cell batteries is the makeup of the Electrolyte. The electrolyte is the material that conducts electricity in the battery. Wet cells have liquid electrolytes, while dry cells have solid electrolytes, usually in the form of a paste or powder. Wet cells were invented before dry cells, and they’re still used in some applications today. Car batteries are a type of wet cell battery. Dry cell batteries are more common. difference between spanner and Wrench

Many people confused with the Hand tools spanner and Wrench. The common tools used in the Industrial maintenance job as well as in the Automobile sector. These tools are used to  provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts—or keep them from turning.Spanner is basically a British Term and Wrench is American Term. Another term used in AUS/NZ that is shifting spanner/ wrench.

bellows sealed valve

Bellows Sealed Valve Vs. Conventional Valve
Conventionally in the  globe valve used  in steam line uses gland packing. Instead of Gland packing The Bellows Sealed valve is consisting of  a bellows cartridge welded to the valve bonnet and stem. There is only a Gasket joint in the valve body and globe site only. So there is Little possibility to leak steam. What is bellows- A device with concertinaed sides to allow it to expand and contract.  As the valve stem strokes, the bellows expands or compresses with the stroke movement. Advantages of using Bellows sealed valve- Thought the initial cost of the bellows sealed valve is high with compare to conventional globe valve but with compare to maintenance and overhead costing is less. For a maintenance Engineer to select a bellows sealed valve instead of conventional valve is a good decision and he/she will be trouble free for a long time. Many factories where steam consumption in the floor is high, there multiple number of valves is needed and in conventional valves (Gland packed seal valve/piston ring valves) maximum times after a short time interval the gland packing leaked. As  a result it looks odd, time consuming to replace valves, Production hampered , risky.

 Maintenance in the Manufacturing Plants. In a manufacturing plant machine maintenance is a very important things. There are several types of mainteance-
Preventive Maintenance
Corrective Maintenance 
Break down Maintenace 
Preventive Maintenance can be classified in two ways-
Schedule Preventive Maintenance - This can be found from Machine Manufacturer
Regular Preventive Maintenance-  On regular basis
Sudden Preventive Maintenance-  Time availability due to production shut down
For an effective maintenance there could be considered some most importatnt thing-
Inventory (spare stock), communication,  data, Man management, and the most is safety.
Now-a-days there are many Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for easy operation of Maintenance which leads the inventory management as well as the machine condition and the previous maintenance information. 
Maintenance or Technical people  main objectives are to reduce Breakdown. 
To reduce break down it needs close monitoring of the rotating parts and proper lubrication. Proper training of the machine operator can reduce breakdown. Also the proper training of maintenance people will reduce the maintenance time and safety.
